I was really pleased to buy a copy of ‘Painting Abstracts’ by Rolina van Vliet this morning. She clearly has a great deal of expertise in this field and delivers lectures about abstract painting as well as having her own studio. It was her paintings that initially drew me to her book, it was the 65 different exercises, each explained in great detail, that persuaded me to buy it.
This isn’t a book where you have to religiously follow each step in order. Instead, you can dip in, picking a lesson at random, so that is what I did this morning. The exercise that I tried was entitled ‘Looking for Rhythm as a Theme’ and this is the result, done with watercolour pencils – I’ll have a go at a ‘proper’ watercolour version when I return home from work later today:
